Riva AQUARAMA 1967

The 1967 Riva Aquarama Second Series represents a key milestone in the evolution of Riva’s most iconic model. Compared with the first series, the Second Series introduced significant technical and construction improvements, reflecting the experience gained during the early years of production, while preserving the timeless elegance that made the Aquarama—first unveiled in 1962—a worldwide legend.

The 1967 model featured the Second Series hull, extended to 8.25 metres (27 ft), with a more elongated bow and a redesigned hull shape that provided improved seaworthiness and handling. The beam was also slightly reduced, giving the boat a sleeker and more refined profile. These refinements formed the design foundation for the later Super Aquarama and Aquarama Special models.

Power was upgraded to twin Riva V8 engines producing 220 HP each, based on Crusader powerplants, replacing the earlier 185 HP Chris-Craft engines. The increased horsepower delivered enhanced performance and a top speed approaching 40 knots, while maintaining the reliability for which the model had become renowned.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Second Series Aquarama retained all the features that established it as a global icon: the mirror-polished mahogany deck, handcrafted chrome fittings, the large wraparound windscreen inspired by the widescreen Cinerama format, the mahogany dashboard with circular gauges, and the separate helm and companion seats. Each boat required hundreds of hours of skilled craftsmanship and multiple coats of hand-applied varnish to achieve its legendary mirror-like finish.

Today, the 1967 Aquarama Second Series is among the most sought-after versions by collectors, representing the perfect balance between the original 1962 design and the technical developments that would culminate in the Super Aquarama. When restored to original Riva factory standards, these boats stand among the finest examples of twentieth-century Italian nautical design.

Additional notes:

The year 1967 also marked the golden age of international yachting. The Aquarama became a familiar sight along the French Riviera, Lake Como, the Italian Riviera, and the great European lakes, establishing itself as the runabout of choice for industrialists, film stars, and members of royal families. As a result, the Aquarama came to symbolize Italian luxury worldwide and further cemented Riva’s reputation as the builder of some of the most prestigious motorboats ever created.
